Should you go digging through memory
You might not like what you find
The dust is best not disturbed
Just leave the past behind

Back then you felt every word cut
Sharper still those never said
A home that never felt safe
Just hanging there
Every day
By a thread

On Maple Street
Just history
Scars mean that you healed
It's concealed

On Maple Street
A chronicle
Written of your past
Now recast

Somewhere there under the surface
Hidden where you rarely see
Are things so long now forgotten
Deciding who you'll be

Somewhere there is an old photo
You'll hear that song you once knew
But there is little to remind
Of what's through
Damage done
cracks accrue

From Maple Street
A brief sojourn
Never to return
Now adjourned

From Maple Street
Long jettisoned
Artifacts of youth
Buried truth

So no don't dwell upon sorrow ,
There are much worse tragedies
You ache like everyone else
So pretend apathy

Whatever moves you on forward
The passions driving you on
Take strength in all your endeavors
Till the scares
Fade and seem
Like they're gone

On Maple Street
Just history
Scars mean that you healed
It's concealed

On Maple Street
A chronicle
Written of your past
Now recast

From Maple Street
A brief sojourn
Never to return
Now adjourned

From Maple Street
Long jettisoned
Artifacts of youth
Buried truth

I wanted a common every day street name, and "Maple" is the most common non-number street name in the US after "Main" and possibly "Park." I also went to high school in Maplewood, and this song is a call back to that time. While skimming my high school journal as something to do during COVID lockdown, I came upon a passage about a girl I'd mostly forgotten. "She's got a fucked home life complete with an alcoholic mom. Her time is spent studying or babysitting as a way of avoiding her problems." I realized that she would never want to skim her high school journal and most likely would not want to think much about that time in her life. However, there is no way to escape that it shapes you. Artifacts are typically physical objects of historical significance that show how society was shaped. I like the idea of personal artifacts that shape who you become. Your formative years shape you whether you bother to think about them or not.
